Okada news in Lagos Today- The reason for the ban!!
Day in day out, there is always an increase of okada riders aka “commercial motorcyclists,” aka “bike riders,” on the roads. The increase in bike riders also brought about an increase in criminal activities using okadas.
If you recall, a sound engineer, David Imoh was recently murdered by some men on a bike.
For this reason and more, the Lagos State Government under the administration of “Babajide Sanwo Olu,” banned the activities of Commercial motorcyclists aka “Okada riders/bike riders,” and sent them parking indefinitely.
If you are outdoor today, you would notice that most of the roads have been deserted by the okada riders following the ban issued on bikes/ okadas.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu banned the operations of Okadas in the following Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Lagos:
- Kosofe
- Oshodi-Isolo
- Shomolu
- Mushin.
- Lagos Island
- Main Island
- Ikeja
- Surulere
- Eti-Osa
- Apapa
The okada/bike ban decision in Lagos was taken to reform the transport sector. It is a follow-up to the February 2020 restriction placed on their activities due to the increase in criminal activities with bikes.
Full enforcement of this law starts on September 1st, 2022. Any rider that breaks the law would face the consequences.
If you ask me, I would say Government should give these bike riders some amount of money to start a new life while taking away their source of income. What do you all think?
