In the history of administrators and governors in Lagos State, there has always been the hype or praise of Governors by musicians in their songs.
These musicians give a special or honorable mention of a governor, political or public figure they feel has done something remarkable and is worth praising. They at times mention someone who is not doing well also.
(A mention is a reference or tribute to someone or something in writing, in songs or other means usually to praise someone/something for a wondrous act, and sometimes criticize someone for being inactive or bad.)
Although, Governor mentions was not typical though in the early days of Lagos Governorship, until the tenure of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who held office between May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2007, under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) party.
You will agree with me that during Tinubu’s tenure, a lot of musicians mentioned his name in their songs, and are still mentioning his name to date, even though he is no longer the governor of Lagos state. Tinubu is one political figure that is highly praised by musicians. Musician, Olamide in particular can’t do without praising him in his songs.
Tinubu was succeeded by Babatunde Raji Fashola who held office between 29th May 2007 to 29th May 2015 under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Party.
You will also agree with me that Fashola was highly mentioned and praised by virtually all musicians in their songs.
Akinwunmi Ambode succeeded Fashola. He held office between 29th May 2015 to 29th, May 2019.
Need I remind you that the name Ambode was so sweet for musicians back then. Musicians mentioned his name continuously in their songs, praising him for his good works.
Fast forward to Sanwo Olu’s tenure who took over from Akinwunmi Ambode on 29th May 2019 and he is still the incumbent governor of Lagos State. But, I have never for once, heard any musician mention his name in any song.
I have racked my brain wondering why though. But, no other reason comes to mind other than Governor SanwoOlu seems to be the over-busy type, and has not shown much interest or support in the entertainment industry. He seems rigid to fun or entertainment or something.
Honestly, if you check his Instagram page @jidesanwoolu, he looks too serious. He is either inspecting the interior and exterior of the newly acquired Talgo Intracity ten coach metropolitan train, commissioning some infrastructural projects, unveiling electricity sustainability framework or addressing grievances of the nursing workforce, or sympathizing with the bereaved or congratulating athletes, or receiving members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Party, or appreciating armed forces.
But Sir, Governor SanwoOlu, please also receive and appreciate these entertainers too ehn. They are doing well and have over time given Nigerians more recognition globally.
What do you all think?
Honestly, I don’t see the entertaining side of Governor Sanwo Olu; or anything leisure about him. Although, there are few posts made by him on Thanksgivings that show the Godly side of him; we bless the Lord.
Like seriously, if I get the opportunity to interview Governor SanwoOlu, one of the questions I would ask is, “Sir, what do you do for leisure?”
